David leads Trivalent with over 25 years of experience in theatrical, entertainment and architectural lighting designs. With an approach using the visual sciences, David has unique approaches to every project and prefers a fully integrated design approach – starting on the project early in conjunction with the architect to affect and shape the architectural environment and look for new ways to integrate the lighting solution. For David, a successful design looks at what lighting “does” to space and not just the fixture selection itself. However, energy and sustainability are always part of the conversation resulting in a cohesive design that balances the art and science of the design.
David is also on the faculty at Iowa State University teaching several classes in the College of Design. With this teaching experience, David has learned to be a good communicator and listener. Clients enjoy this personality trait of David’s as it makes it very easy to communicate with him regarding their design goals, concerns or questions. David thoroughly explains the reasoning behind all of his designs and enjoys the challenges that clients bring to him for help on. David is also a frequent speaker and presenter to various conferences and professional organizations – explaining trends and technologies that are advancing in the lighting industry – impacting human health, psychology and the environment.
A graduate of The Catholic University of America’s School of Architecture, Chris started his career in architecture studios learning detailing and design on a wide range of project types. Early in his career he was bitten by the lighting design bug and has spent nearly 10 years working for lighting consultants and lighting manufacturers on the East coast. He and his wife relocated to Iowa in 2013 and he began working for a local lighting rep agency before getting back into design community full-time. His experiences blend a talent for detailing, well-honed architectural design skills, and a keen consideration for budgeting into a comprehensive package that allows Chris to communicate fluently with architects, engineers and contractors to help them realize the full potential of their designs through lighting.
Courtney’s eye for design is unmatched and rare to find in lighting design firms. With a BFA in Interior Design and additional credentials in Graphic Design, Courtney understands the design vocabulary required to compliment the interior design finishes, themes and styles brought to a project by the architect and interior designers. Courtney also spent time employed by a lighting showroom working with contractors – so she understands pricing, delivery, schedules and the need for a product to match all the above. She also has a vast knowledge of manufacturers and can typically find an alternative to a product when required due to budgets or availability without compromising the design aesthetics.
